Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante condemned the actions of protesters and defended police after chaos broke out at a demonstration Friday evening against the NATO Parliamentary Assembly taking place in the city. Plante held a news conference Monday afternoon, saying Montreal police officers have attended nearly 500 protests since the war in Gaza began last fall. "The images from Friday are shocking: people breaking windows, torching vehicles," Plante said. "We have to reiterate loud and clear that gestures or words like we saw over the weekend have no place in Montreal. Protesting is a fundamental right, but not to the detriment of other communities." Montreal police say at least three people were arrested after pro-Palestinian and anti-NATO demonstrators turned violent, with protesters throwing objects at police, lighting two vehicles on fire and breaking windows. Police say they arrested a 22-year-old woman for obstructing police work and assaulting a police officer, as well as two men, 22 and 28, both for obstructing police work. All three were released and will appear in court at a later date. Trudeau, political leaders denounce 'violence and hatred' at anti-NATO demonstration in Montreal The protest, organized by the Divest for Palestine collective and anti-capitalist group CLAC, was meant to denounce the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, as the city hosts the 70th annual session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly from Nov. 22 to 25. Organizers said the purpose of the protest was to demonstrate against what he called NATO's "complicity with Israel's military while it's conducting its genocide in Gaza." They also pointed to "war crimes in Lebanon, Syria" and other injustices in the region. While Canada and the United States are NATO members, Israel is not. Plante blamed the property damage on what she called "professional vandals" who she said are known to police. She accused them of co-opting the protests to carry out violence and said more arrests are expected once police examine more footage from the events. No place for hate at protests: Trudeau Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also addressed the protests on Monday. "In democracy, we will always defend freedom of expression, of protesting, of expressing our opposition on certain positions, but there is never place for violence, for hate or intimidation," Trudeau told reporters. On Saturday, on X, Trudeau called what happened "appalling." "Acts of antisemitism, intimidation and violence must be condemned wherever we see them," he wrote. He said the RCMP was in touch with local police, adding "there must be consequences and rioters held accountable." WATCH | Smashed windows, torched cars seen at weekend protest as city hosts NATO Parliamentary Assembly: At least 3 arrested after anti-NATO, pro-Palestinian protests in Montreal 2 days ago Duration 3:42 Montreal police say at least three people were arrested after anti-NATO and pro-Palestinian demonstrators converged in the city's downtown core, with protesters throwing objects at police, lighting two vehicles on fire and breaking windows. Over the weekend, Montreal police said they have not received any reports of antisemitic acts or other hate crimes related to the demonstration. Plante was asked Monday whether Friday's protests were antisemitic, but she said she did not believe they were. The mayor noted that the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) is the only police service in the province to have received special training on crowd management, terrorist attacks and cybersecurity. "I'm extremely proud of the police force we have here in Montreal. I want to thank them. The work will continue," Plante said. In an interview with Radio-Canada's morning radio program Tout un matin , Dagher said the chaos only lasted about five minutes. "It's as if we played a spotless hockey season but all that's talked about is the one goal that went through," Dagher said, after noting the hundreds of demonstrations Montreal police have watched over in the past year.

WASHINGTON—Participating in the annual tradition one last time before leaving office, President Joe Biden reportedly told a pardoned Thanksgiving turkey “You’re the Bonnie to my Clyde” on Monday before running off with it and disappearing over the horizon. “It’s us against the world now, turkey,” said the commander-in-chief, grabbing the bird by the wing and laughing wildly as the two of them fled the White House grounds in a convertible, the turkey’s handlers in hot pursuit. “They’re going to keep coming after us, you know, but I’ve got your back, and I know you’ve got mine. It’ll be just you, me, and the wide open road, together until the end. Don’t worry, I’ve got a cozy little place in Delaware we can hide out in until things die down.” At press time, Biden urged the turkey to take the wheel so that he could fend off the Secret Service agents on their tail.Russian Pensioners, Tricked by Scammers, Carry Out Risky Stunts

The Village Board voted unanimously Dec. 3 to adopt a budget of $97 million with a $200,000 surplus for the coming year. The board also voted to increase the levy by $527,000, all of which, officials said, can be attributed to new development of property. “The 2025 budget continues the village’s ongoing commitment to challenging the status quo, evaluating opportunities for alternative service delivery models and holding the line on cost increases,” co-Finance Directors Iwona Posniak and Katie Iraci said in a written report to the board. “Current property taxpayers will see no increase in the village portion of their property tax bill.” Among the “highlights” they shared in the budget are a $1 million increase in revenue from state sales tax, which reflects a projection that sales will increase by 4%, according to David Just, a spokesperson for the village. That, per the budget, is expected to generate $24.2 million in 2025. On the expense side, the budget accounts for an increase in contractual expenses, including increases of $985,000 in business retention, $270,000 in equipment maintenance, $235,000 in landscape services and $207,000 in information technology services, Posniak and Iraci said. “These increases were partially offset by decreases in other professional services ($243,000), snow and ice maintenance ($198,000), and building and plan review services ($197,000),” they said. Village President Michael Jenny praised staff and the board for the months-long preparation of the budget. “It’s an important role in village government to make sure the public budget, balance sheet and income statement are properly maintained and cared for,” Jenny said. “We have to carefully match expenses with revenue in an inflationary environment, while properly funding our first responders (and) our actuarial pension requirements, and keeping our village services and infrastructure maintained.” Other projected revenue increases include $234,000 from the home rule sales tax, expected to increase 2% to $11.7 million. Although building permit revenue is expected to be 60% lower than projected for 2024, 2025 revenue is expected to rebound by 43% above the 2024 projections, Posniak and Iraci said. “In addition to the core projects associated with residential and commercial remodeling, the 2025 budget includes the adjusted project timelines for large one-time projects or redevelopments that are now anticipated to be constructed in 2025,” they said. Among those are several large one-time projects or redevelopments, such as new buildings in the Dermody Logistics Campus. Among expenses that are projected to increase, Posniak and Iraci said, are: $624,000 in personnel costs, due primarily to merit and contractual increases, as well as new and restructured positions $525,000 in “other charges,” including increases in police and fire pension costs Those increases are partially offset by a $106,000 decrease in risk management fixed charges and a $94,000 decline in general liability insurance costs, they said. One resident, William Seitz, addressed the board during the public hearing before the vote on the budget. Seitz said the village’s permanent fund and capital improvement fund should be included in the annual budget. “Maybe staff can do a better job of reporting it,” he said. The capital improvement budget totaled $39.5 million, Posniak and Iraci said.
Madagali people of northern Adamawa seek first-class chiefdomBy CHRIS MEGERIAN and COLLEEN LONG WASHINGTON (AP) — In the two weeks since Donald Trump won the presidency, he’s tried to demonstrate his dominance by naming loyalists for top administration positions, even though many lack expertise and some face sexual misconduct accusations. It often seems like he’s daring Congress to oppose his decisions. But on Thursday, Trump’s attempt to act with impunity showed a crack as Matt Gaetz , his choice for attorney general, withdrew from consideration. Trump had named Gaetz, a Florida congressman, to be the country’s top law enforcement official even though he was widely disliked by his colleagues, has little legal experience and was accused of having sex with an underage girl, an allegation he denied. After being plagued by investigations during his first presidency, Trump wanted a devoted ally in charge of the Justice Department during his second. However, it was never obvious that Gaetz could win enough support from lawmakers to get confirmed as attorney general. Trump chose for a replacement Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general who defended him during his first impeachment trial and supported his false claims of voter fraud. Now the question is whether Gaetz was uniquely unpalatable, or if Trump’s other picks might exceed his party’s willingness to overlook concerns that would have sunk nominees in a prior political era. The next test will likely be Pete Hegseth, who Trump wants to lead the Pentagon despite an allegation of sexual assault that he’s denied. So far, Republicans are rallying around Hegseth , an Army veteran and former Fox News host. Sen. Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican who serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the controversy over Gaetz would have little bearing on Trump’s other choices. He said they would be considered “one at a time.” Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, suggested otherwise, claiming “the dominoes are falling.” “The drip drip of evidence and truth is going to eventually doom some others,” he said. Trump’s election victory was a sign that there may not be many red lines left in American politics. He won the presidential race despite authoritarian, racist and misogynist rhetoric, not to mention years of lies about election fraud and his role in sparking the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He was also criminally convicted of falsifying business records to pay hush money, and he was found liable for sexual abuse in a civil case. Empowered by voters who looked past his misconduct and saw him as a powerful agent of change, Trump has shown no deference to Washington norms while working to fill his second administration . The transition team hasn’t pursued federal background checks for Trump’s personnel choices. While some of his selections have extensive experience in the areas they’ve been chosen to lead, others are personal friends and Fox News personalities who have impressed and flattered Trump over the years. Several have faced allegations involving sexual misconduct . Hegseth is facing the most scrutiny after Gaetz. Once Trump announced Hegseth as his nominee for Pentagon chief, allegations emerged that he sexually assaulted a woman in California in 2017. The woman said he took her phone, blocked the door to the hotel room and refused to let her leave, according to a police report made public this week. Hegseth told police at the time that the encounter had been consensual and denied any wrongdoing, the report said. However, he paid the woman a confidential settlement in 2023. Hegseth’s lawyer said the payment was made to head off the threat of a baseless lawsuit. Trump’s choice for secretary of health and human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has faced allegations of misconduct too. A woman who babysat for him and his second wife told Vanity Fair magazine that Kennedy groped her in the late 1990s, when she was 23. Kennedy did not deny the allegation and texted an apology to the woman after the article was published. That isn’t the only hurdle for Kennedy; he’s spent years spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories about vaccines, raising fears about making him a top health official in the new administration. Linda McMahon, chosen by Trump to be education secretary, is fighting a lawsuit connected to her former company, World Wrestling Entertainment. She’s accused of knowingly enabling sexual exploitation of children by an employee as early as the 1980s, and she denies the allegations. Tulsi Gabbard is another person who could face a difficult confirmation battle, but for very different reasons. The former Democratic representative from Hawaii has been a vocal Trump ally, and he chose her to be national intelligence director. But there’s grave concern by lawmakers and national security officials over Gabbard’s history of echoing Russian propaganda. Critics said she would endanger relationships with U.S. allies. Gaetz was investigated by federal law enforcement for sex trafficking, but the case was closed without charges and Republicans have blocked the release of a related report from the House Ethics Committee. However, some allegations leaked out, including that Gaetz paid women for sex. One of the women testified to the committee that she saw Gaetz having sex with a 17-year-old girl, according to a lawyer for the woman. As Gaetz met with senators this week, it became clear that he would face stubborn resistance from lawmakers who were concerned about his behavior and believed he was unqualified to run the Justice Department. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction,” Gaetz wrote on social media when announcing his withdrawal. Sen. Mike Braun, an Indiana Republican, said he believed there were four to six members of the caucus who would have voted against Gaetz, likely dooming his nomination, and “the math got too hard.” He said some of the issues and allegations around Gaetz were “maybe beyond the pale.” “I think there were just too many things, it was like a leaky dike, and you know, it broke,” Braun said. Trump thanked Gaetz in a post on Truth Social, his social media website, without addressing the substance of the allegations against him. “He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect,” Trump wrote. Associated Press writers Mary Clare Jalonick, Stephen Groves and Lisa Macaro contributed from Washington. Jill Colvin in New York and Adriana Gomez Licon in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, also contributed.BIG 12 THIS WEEK

The Hawks eliminated top-seeded North Carolina in the semifinals to advance. The Tar Heels have won the championship in half of their 22 trips to the final. Northwestern grabbed the lead 6:25 into the first quarter when Zimmer used an assist from Tromp to score. Zimmer had an assist on Olivia Bent-Cole's eighth goal of the season for a 2-0 advantage, and Tromp found the net with 25 seconds left with assists from Lauren Hunter and Ashley Sessa for a 3-0 lead. Hunter and Sessa again had the helpers on Zimmer's 10th goal of the campaign, and Hunter and Regan Cornelius assisted on Tromp's 11th goal of the season 2:42 later for a 5-0 lead at halftime and that was that. Annabel Skubisz finished with her school-record 14th shutout of the season for Northwestern. Zimmer and Tromp are the second duo to score multiple goals for their school in a championship match. Zimmer was named the tournament MVP. It was the second championship for Wildcats coach Tracey Fuchs. Speaking during the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee Meeting (DISHA) held here today, the minister said that the region which had remained untouched by development for the past many decades was now connected by a wide web of highways, improving connectivity in far-flung areas of Doda. He called for the early completion of important projects, including the Khellani tunnel and Goha-Marmat Highway to further boost connectivity in the Chenab Valley. He asked the concerned authorities to accelerate the execution of these projects for timely completion, without lapsing any funds. The minister instructed the officials to prioritise public participation in developmental initiatives in line with the spirit of Jan Bhagidari for their effective implementation. Reaffirming the government’s commitment towards ensuring the district’s holistic development, Singh stressed the importance of implementing local benefit schemes like Ayushman Bharat and drug-free initiatives. He called for conductive regular awareness campaigns to educate the public. The minister also encouraged the officials to organise skill development programs to create job opportunities for unemployed youth besides intensifying sports activities in the district. He proposed organising another lavender festival in the district next year to promote its cultivation besides highlighting the tourism potential of picturesque Bhaderwah, which has gained wide recognition as a prominent tourist destination. Singh also called for organising workshops to enhance innovation strategies and improve the district’s agricultural practices. While chairing the DISHA held in Kishtwar with the entire district administration, Singh called for expediting the speed of ongoing hydel power projects. He said that these plants would generate an estimated capacity of 8000 MW, enabling J&K emerge as the biggest power hub of North India. The minister called upon the National Hydro Power Corporation Limited (NHPCL) to undertake capacity building of local unskilled labour to increase their employability for projects requiring specific skills and specialised training. Reviewing the status of projects aimed at boosting connectivity in the district, he called for expediting the construction of a full-fledged airstrip in the district under Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN). Reviewing the status of works under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMSY) and Jal Jeevan Mission, Singh urged that the concerned departments, including R&B, need to work in close coordination with the public representatives for speedy and better execution of projects. Calling for bridging the communication gap, he said that the district administration must follow a Standard Operating Procedure for sharing information with the PRIs during field visits conducted by officials. The minister said that inputs of PRI representatives should be taken by the officials for effective implementation of the works. Noting the negative impact of some of infrastructure projects on the health of common citizens due to pollution and land degradation, he instructed for putting in place an arrangement for carrying out a dynamic exercise as regards environment clearance granted for these projects. Singh said that it must also be ensured that the best practices are adopted for the protection of the environment and public health. Expressing concern over some public servants, such as doctors and teachers, quitting their jobs without following due procedure, he said that a uniform policy needs to be firmed up under which if these civil servants, relinquish their posts, they must be made to provide hefty compensation to the government for putting citizens to inconvenience. The minister underlined that the proposed policy is the need of the hour to avert a crisis across departments emanating from a dearth of staff in future. He directed the district administration to organise mass awareness camps highlighting the benefits of lavender, Ayushman Bharat scheme and PM Surya Ghar Mutt Bijli Yojana. Singh called for promoting Sansad Khelkud Spardha to develop sporting talent among the local youth and also pitched for branding of local products, such as cumin seeds and saffron. He informed that a saffron park will come up in Kishtwar soon. He also called for further exploration of the world’s finest sapphire discovered in the mines of the Paddar area in the district for the generation of additional revenue and the creation of more employment opportunities for the local youth.Liverpool vs. Real Madrid: Arne Slot Champions League double injury blow ahead of Manchester City Anfield clash - Sports Mole
