Asset manager Browning West LP sold a quarter of its stake in Gildan Activewear Inc. GIL-T for $181-million this month after leading a successful campaign in the spring to reinstate the T-shirt maker’s founder and replace the board. Browning West is the latest in a string of Gildan’s institutional investors to sell a portion of their holdings after the Montreal-based company’s share price soared subsequent to the return of chief executive officer Glenn Chamandy in May. In U.S. regulatory filings, Browning West said it needed to take profits after Gildan’s success made it an outsized holding in the Los Angeles-based fund manager’s portfolio. Last December, Gildan’s board dismissed Mr. Chamandy, then aged 61, over succession issues after 40 years at the company and two decades as chief executive officer. Gildan is one of the world’s largest clothing manufacturers, with a $10.7-billion market capitalization. In January, Browning West launched a campaign to name a new board and bring back Mr. Chamandy, and revealed a significant stake in the company. Most of us are not professional chefs or caterers or decorators, so the thought of cooking for and entertaining a Thanksgiving crowd can be daunting. That's why we turned to the experts — professional chefs and caterers and interior designers — to discuss some typical Thanksgiving mistakes and how to avoid them. "The overriding first mistake people make is they think they have more time than they do," said Bistro to Go Cafe and Catering executive chef Kate Kobylinski. She regularly hosts her extended family of 30 and knows "every single problem." "Food takes longer to cook, the table takes longer to set and houses take longer to clean than you think." Clean your house on Monday. On Wednesday, dice vegetables so they're "food-show ready," as Kobylinski put it. Prepare (but don't cook) your green bean casserole (leaving off garnishes like fried onions) so it can just be popped in the oven and set the dining room table. Don't feel that you have to do everything yourself. But be as specific as possible when doling out the assignments. "Don't let them make their own decisions!" Kobylinski said emphatically. Thanksgiving is "micromanager's heaven." For example, have someone bring ice on Thanksgiving Day because going out to buy it takes time and ice hogs freezer space. If you don't like making desserts, have someone bring one. If a guest wants to prepare a side dish, great, but decide beforehand what they will bring. Ahead of dinner, interior designer Kacie Cope likes to set out all of her serving platters with Post-it notes attached denoting what will go on them. "You'll be amazed if you have them labeled," she said. "People can help in a jiff." During the evening, Kobylinski gives people assigned jobs, such as serving drinks or taking charge of an after-dinner game. And the chef is forgiving about using premade ingredients, like gravy or cranberry jelly. "There's no right or wrong way to make any of your foods," she said. But you might want to give a homemade touch to prepared ingredients, like adding sauteed onions or celery to prepared gravy. "Everyone goes into Thanksgiving Day with a half-frozen turkey," said Kobylinski. "And you can't get the bag of giblets out because they're frozen in place." It takes one day for every 4 pounds of turkey meat to defrost in the refrigerator. (No, it is not safe to leave your frozen turkey out on the counter to thaw and breed bacteria.) So if you've got a 20-pound bird, you've got to start thawing on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. However, there are other methods. Kobylinski suggests submerging the bird and running a thin stream of cold water over it. "It doesn't have to be a lot of water." The U.S. Department of Agriculture says there are only three ways to safely thaw food: In the refrigerator, in cold water or in the microwave. To safely thaw turkey in cold water, the USDA says it takes about 30 minutes per pound. Put the turkey in a leak-proof plastic bag to prevent cross-contamination and submerge it. Change the water every 30 minutes, and cook immediately when it's thawed. If opting for your microwave, follow its instructions for thawing and cook immediately. Then, if you're running late and need to speed things up to satisfy the hungry hordes, you can cut the bird in half before cooking (skin side up). This significantly reduces cooking time, requiring about 10 minutes per pound. Kobylinski also recommends resting the turkey on vegetables in the oven to keep the bottom from getting burned. Private chef and culinary educator Emily Larsen warns that those plastic thermometers in supermarket turkeys are setting you up for failure. The USDA says that you should cook a turkey until the internal temperature is 165 degrees. Plastic thermometers don't pop out until the breast meat is at about 180 degrees, "when your turkey is completely dry," Larsen said. Plus, people forget that meat continues to cook once it's out of the oven. She recommends taking a bird out of the oven when it is at 155 degrees — she likes to use an inexpensive instant-read folding probe thermometer — and continue to monitor it. (Insert it into the thickest part of the breast, avoiding the bone.) "Ten dollars [for the thermometer] can save your Thanksgiving," she said. Some feel that buying a frozen rather than fresh bird is another no-no, since freezing leaches water out of the turkey. However, if, despite your best efforts, your turkey is lacking moisture, Kobylinski has a fix: Put warm chicken or turkey stock and clarified butter into a mister and spritz sliced turkey with it before serving. "The same with stuffing if it's too dry," she said. Thanksgiving Day is not the time to try out a completely new recipe. And you don't have to lay out 10 side dishes. In addition to opting for a simple menu, Kobylinski also recommends figuring out how long your items will take to cook and what method of cooking it requires ahead of time. Your turkey will be monopolizing your oven for four hours, so other oven foods should be limited or be easily reheated during the time that the turkey is resting. (As for resting a turkey, the chef puts her turkey on a hot plate with towels over it so "the meat rebinds itself and stabilizes for a smoother cut.") "Stovetop items should be staggered," she said, so you don't have a frying pan and three pots all going at once. As a sample menu, she suggests you might have one baked potato dish and one mashed. And for vegetables, one baked dish and one that is blanched or grilled. Interior designers advise against going too crazy with holiday-specific décor. "There's a lot that's being sold to us that we feel like we need," said Pittsburgh interior designer Amanda Bock. Do you really need a turkey-shaped vase or pilgrim figurines? "They're out for two weeks, and then you have to figure out where to store them," agreed Cope. "It takes an already busy season and makes it stressful in an unnecessary way." Cope says you can take things that are already part of your menu and use them as décor — a bowl of nuts or cranberries, or even removing the label from a cranberry sauce tin and repurposing it as a vase for flowers and fall leaves. Bock adds that dining room table décor should be kept to a minimum, since you'll need space for your food. You don't have to have "big chargers and five plates and three different glasses, plus all of your Thanksgiving food on the table," Bock said. If you do have flowers or a centerpiece in the middle of the table, keep it low, Cope advised. "That way, you can actually see the person who's across the table from you." Tableware and tablecloths might be in fall colors, so they can be repurposed throughout the season. Water glasses or wine goblets could be amber-toned, Bock suggests. Well in advance of your guests' arrival, think critically about the setup of your home. Don't be afraid to rearrange your furniture so your guests move to different areas and don't all congregate in your kitchen. "You want to make sure that there are areas where people can sit and chat, watch the parade or just hang out together," Bock said. Set up a drinks station and an hors d'oeuvres station in different parts of the house, Bock suggests. Though, she admits, "I can't do that in my house because my dogs would just gobble up the hors d'oeuvres." She suggests repurposing a kitchen nook for kid seating, or as a serving area. Kobylinski might set up a half-built puzzle in a side room. She even puts out winter jackets and boots for "the gentlemen" for the moment when she urges them to go out on the porch to smoke cigars and drink brandy so they won't be underfoot. As a finishing touch, don't neglect to set the mood by using lamps around the room instead of harsh overhead lights. Putting out tapers or tea candles establishes an intimate feeling. "That just leans into the cozy fall vibe," Cope said of low lighting. But don't use scented candles, Bock warns. Or a smelly flower arrangement. "That can overwhelm you when you're eating," Bock said. Putting on a favorite music playlist can set the mood and take away self-consciousness, especially early in the evening. The Orioles are planning to non-tender reliever Jacob Webb, two sources with direct knowledge confirmed to The Baltimore Sun ahead of Friday’s 8 p.m. arbitration tender deadline. The move makes Webb, who posted a 3.09 ERA in 78 2/3 innings in two seasons with Baltimore, a free agent. The decision comes a few weeks after the ballclub for 2025. In 81 innings over the past two years, Coulombe posted a 2.56 ERA and a sparkling 0.951 WHIP. Webb and Coulombe both missed time with elbow injuries in 2024 but managed to put up perhaps career-best performances on the mound. Manager Brandon Hyde frequently used both relievers because both pitchers have platoon-neutral profiles that allow them to succeed versus both right- and left-handed hitters. Webb joined the Orioles as a waiver claim in 2023 and experienced immediate success. Despite struggling in the 2023 postseason, he won a roster spot out of spring training in 2024 and was a consistent performer out of the bullpen. This is Iceland’s sixth general election since the 2008 financial crisis devastated the economy of the North Atlantic island nation and ushered in a new era of political instability. Opinion polls suggest the country may be in for another upheaval, with support for the three governing parties plunging. Benediktsson, who was named prime minister in April following the resignation of his predecessor, struggled to hold together the unlikely coalition of his conservative Independence Party with the centrist Progressive Party and the Left-Green Movement. Iceland, a nation of about 400,000 people, is proud of its democratic traditions, describing itself as arguably the world’s oldest parliamentary democracy. The island’s parliament, the Althingi, was founded in 930 by the Norsemen who settled the country. Here’s what to look for in the contest. How does the election work? Voters will choose 63 members of the Althingi in an election that will allocate seats both by regional constituencies and proportional representation. Expected to reach a top speed of 400 kilometers per hour when operational, it will become the fastest high-speed train in the world, according to the country's railway operator China State Railway Group (CSRG). The CR450 prototype surpasses international standards in several key areas, including operational speed, energy efficiency, cabin noise, and braking distance performance, noted the CSRG. During trials, the train achieved a record speed of 450 km/h (280 mph), and is designed for a commercial operational speed of 400 km/h (250 mph). Once in service, the CR450 will drastically reduce travel times, making journeys more efficient and convenient for passengers. To contribute, click here . ••• Jimmy Carter, who started out his road to the White House as “Jimmy Who?” in Iowa, popped up a few times during my 50-year journalism career, the final time as an elder statesman and a personable, charming ex-president at Minnesota Public Radio’s St. Paul studios. But before that, the nation’s 39th president, who died Sunday at his home in Plains, Ga., at 100, accounted for one of the most exciting, but scary, moments I could imagine. I was a young United Press International reporter in Des Moines in 1976 when the former Georgia governor campaigned all over the Hawkeye State. I would answer the bureau phone and hear press secretary Jody Powell calling to give a report on Carter’s campaign schedule. I was in the bureau the night of the Iowa caucuses when Carter “won.” Well, he didn’t really win. He came in second to “uncommitted,” but the press needed a winner, so the title went to the Georgia peanut farmer. And from there, Carter became the Democratic nominee for president and beat President Gerald Ford that November. In 1978, I was transferred to Illinois to open a UPI bureau in Champaign-Urbana. In 1979, the Carter family vacationed on a seven-day trip down the Mississippi River on the riverboat Delta Queen from St. Paul, with stops in Wabasha and other small river towns, to St. Louis. I was assigned to help cover the trip. On their way south, the Carters stopped in Davenport in the Quad Cities, where they had spent time during the 1976 campaign. From there, Carter was scheduled to cross the Mississippi to Moline, Ill., to visit John Deere headquarters to talk energy. As the motorcade was getting ready to cross the bridge, UPI’s White House correspondent came up to me and asked whether I wanted to cover the trip to Moline. I said yes, and he handed me his credentials, which I put over my head. Today, the Secret Service would never tolerate such a security breach. Quite nervous about my new assignment, I got into the front seat of “Wire 2.” In the back seat were TV news legends Lesley Stahl, Judy Woodruff and Sam Donaldson. “Who are you?” they asked. Now, I was terrified. What if someone shot at the presidential motorcade, and I had to report a major national story. I thought of Merriman Smith, the UPI correspondent who was in the Dallas motorcade when President John Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. It was UPI legend how Smith dictated his bulletin to the Dallas bureau — “three shots fired at President Kennedy’s motorcade today in downtown Dallas” — and then held onto the phone so reporter Jack Bell couldn’t dictate his story to the rival Associated Press. In those days, there was only one car for the wire reporters. In 1979, there were two. An aside to the Dallas story: When Smith filed his bulletin, it broke into a story from St. Paul on the T. Eugene Thomas murder trial. Only one story could move at a time and then only at 60 words a minute. Back to the Carter trip. Thankfully, the president didn’t make any big news that day. My memory is seeing him ride some Deere farm vehicle for a photo op. But just for the experience, I took the opportunity to dictate a story to the Chicago bureau from the car, knowing that three of the nation’s top network correspondents were listening in. Back at the University of Illinois campus, there was a political science professor named Betty Glad. In 1980, she published a biography titled: “Jimmy Carter: In Search of the Great White House.” Carter was running for re-election against former California Gov. Ronald Reagan. The book was advertised as “The only thorough and accurate account” of Carter’s presidency and earlier life. That sounded pretty impressive, so I got an interview with Prof. Glad and wrote a story about the Carter biography. The author spent much of the book psychoanalyzing Carter’s personality and some of it wasn’t favorable — actually, downright negative. But she autographed her book for me. Fast-forward to the mid-1990s. I was a producer at MPR and Jimmy Carter was a radio guest. I made sure I brought Prof. Glad’s book to the Green Room so the former president could autograph it. I thought it would be really cool to have the book signed by both the author and a former president. I showed it to Carter, and he looked puzzled. He had never heard of the book. I was stunned. Was that even possible? But as any politician would do, he signed the book and gave me that big toothy Carter smile. This one hurt deep down, when you know how far you’ve come and how hard you’ve worked to get there. When you know that a slow 20-game start to a season doesn’t define who you are or how you play. Hyman has done his talking on the ice since being left off Team Canada earlier this month. He’s avoided questions about it. It’s no coincidence his production has gone up since then. In the seven games he’s played, he’s scored a league-high eight goals. That comes after scoring just three in the first 20 games of the season. The eight goals are two more than Leon Draisaitl, having a sensational year, five more than Connor McDavid, six more than Rocket Richard Trophy contender Sam Reinhart. Would Hyman be more suited to play for Canada in the 4 Nations Face-off than Brad Marchand or Reinhart, more suited than Travis Konecny, Brandon Hagel or Seth Jarvis? And most suited to play with McDavid? Barring an injury, he can’t be added to the Canadian team for the February tournament. But he should be part of the Olympic team one year from now in Milan. The best thing to do between now and Milan is tell Hyman he can’t do something. Apparently, nothing motivates him more than proving people wrong. Laughton happens to be a very popular player on the Flyers team ... If the Leafs trade for Laughton and choose to re-sign John Tavares next season at about $6 million a year — my price not theirs — that would mean they would be paying $9 million for Tavares and Laughton next season which is $2 million less than they’re paying now for Tavares alone ... Peter Laviolette’s long history as an NHL coach: Great first season with new team, not so great after that. Sometimes the drop happens in the third season. He has a little Pat Burns in him record-wise. Burns had his best seasons in Montreal, Toronto, Boston and New Jersey in the first season he coached those teams ... Two reasons why too many goaltenders get injured: 1) the butterfly style of play. It’s unnaturally hard on a players’ hips and knees; 2) The RVH stance — or not as well-known as the reverse vertical horizontal stance. That’s hard on goalies’ ankles and hips ... We’re day-to-day on the grandchild watch in our house. If the Leafs were making the announcement, the day-to-day baby would be coming in four to six weeks. HEAR AND THERE The obsession over getting Vladimir Guerrero Jr. signed long-term is fascinating from at least one point of view: As Vladdy was having an exceptional season for the Jays, the club did not. It finished 20 games behind the Yankees ... With Guerrero being great, the Jays still finished 13th in home runs, 11th in runs scored, 14th in stolen bases, 12th in WAR. So far, they’ve added speed and defence in Andres Gimenez, who will add to their stolen base total. But where is the additional offence coming from? ... By chasing Juan Soto, the Jays established a price they would pay for a single player. In other words, by not signing Soto, all they did was damage their own negotiating position with Guerrero. Truth is, they should have had him re-signed years ago, long term, and for way less money than they’ll end up paying him now. That’s poor management on their part ... Since missing out on Soto, the Yankees have added Max Fried, closer Devin Williams, traded for Cody Bellinger and signed Paul Goldschmidt. To date, the Jays have added Gimenez and some middle of the road relief pitchers ... If I’m Edward Rogers and I own the Blue Jays — and soon I’ll own just about everything — I would watch Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins closely. If they don’t add anything of consequence between now and April, I would show them the door before the season begins ... Cheering as always for Calgary’s Mike Soroka to find his way back as a big-league pitcher who matters. It’s been a tough few years for the oft-injured Soroka, who is still only 27 years old. Soroka is surprisingly being paid $9 million by the Washington Nationals on a one-year deal. RIP RICKEY HENDERSON There are many Rickey Henderson stories. This is my favourite. He was in his 40s, still playing, sitting on the bus with one of his final major-league teams. The younger players, killing time, were playing ‘Where were you when this happened?’ They came to the Joe Carter home run. One player said he was in high school. Another said he was in grade school. Another was in the low minors. The bus almost went silent before Henderson spoke: He said: “I was on second base.” Indeed he was in his only Blue Jays season when the Jays won their second World Series. Henderson played on nine teams in 25 big-league years and in his only season in Toronto he called me and a whole lot of other people “big man.” As in: “How’s it going, big man?” Because he couldn’t remember names. Rickey stole more bases and scored more runs than anyone in baseball history. The perpetually young Henderson was just 65 when he passed away on Saturday, leaving behind memories of a great smile a spectacular career and an unintentional sense of humour. SCENE AND HEARD So, this makes no sense to a former college economics student: NBA television ratings are plummeting like a bad stock and, at the same time, players salaries are significantly on the rise. We’re watching less of these guys who are getting paid more. Who’s in charge of this model, Chrystia Freeland? ... The only thing I remember from economics in university: A thick textbook written by Lipsey, Sparks and Steiner ... The commissioner of the NBA is concerned there is too much three-point shooting in basketball. The commissioner of baseball is concerned about the state of starting pitching. The NHL commissioner, Gary Bettman, is likely less concerned about the game and more concerned about the state of the Canadian dollar, where his cash cow franchises in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are bringing in revenue from a shrinking loonie ... There is no Bob Cole or Doc Emrick calling hockey any longer, which is unfortunate for all of us. But every time I hear Gord Miller, I think he’s the best play-by-play man in the game. Until I hear Chris Cuthbert, and then I think he’s the best play-by-play man in the game. So I can’t decide which one I like better. They’re 1-2, 2-1 on my list ... Cris Collinsworth is my favourite colour man in football and has been for years ... I have great admiration for Lou Lamoriello and all he has accomplished in his NHL career. But I’m bothered when I watch the rather aimless New York Islanders play. I wish this roster could be fixed. I wish Lou could pull off some old style magic. I really do ... Fame is fleeting. Mike Krushelnyski had a fine 14-year NHL career playing for five different teams, including the Leafs. He was good enough to be part of the Mitch Marner Christmas charity event last week. Yet, when the local CTV station interviewed him the other day, they fonted him as Mike ‘Krushynski’. They must have missed that 88-point season he had in Edmonton with the 1985 Stanley Cup champion Oilers. AND ANOTHER THING Josh Allen is just about everybody’s pick for NFL MVP, which means the eye test is winning. Superman rules. Statistically, though, Lamar Jackson, the defending MVP and a two-time winner, has better numbers than Allen. He’s passed for more yards, run for more yards, and thrown fewer interceptions. In fact, all three of Jackson’s interceptions have come on balls that should have been caught by a Baltimore receiver. The unstoppable Allen, however, has run for 11 touchdowns, eight more than Jackson ... Pretty impressive to have Allen, Jackson, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert and Bo Nix, all in the AFC, all 28 years old or younger. The old young man in the conference — the 14-1 Patrick Mahomes at 29 ... The statistic coaches love about Nix: The rookie rarely gets sacked. He’s been sacked 22 times in 15 games this season in Denver. Caleb Williams has been sacked 58 times in Chicago ... Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who does just about everything right, just about every day, had a rough night in the final game of the NBA Cup. He made just eight of 24 shots and didn’t look like an MVP candidate opposite Giannis Antetokounmpo ... Four of the top five scorers in the NBA, which includes Giannis and Gilgeous-Alexander, are not Americans. Wonder if this is also part of the reason why NBA ratings are tanking in front of a xenophobic audience ... From the Department of Some Things In Life Make No Sense: The National Women’s Soccer League in the U.S., is selling expansion franchises for more than $100 million ... There’s a Jarome Iginla car commercial on TV, with him saying it was his dream to be the first athlete to play professional baseball and professional hockey at the same time. It’s a very nice commercial and Iginla is impossible to dislike, so we hate to point out that before he played a game in the NHL, Kirk McCaskill pitched for the California Angels and played for Winnipeg’s AHL farm team in Sherbrooke. That’s professional baseball and professional hockey at just about the same time. McCaskill wound up pitching 12 seasons in the big leagues ... Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Glavine was selected in the 1984 NHL draft, well ahead of Brett Hull, Luc Robitaille and Gary Suter. He officially played one game of professional hockey at the age of 43 in the East Coast League. Just so he could tell people he was a pro hockey player and a pro baseball player ... CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Bengals finally managed to win a close game. Seven of Cincinnati’s eight losses this season have been by one score. The frustration of not being able to close out these games had started to fester among the confounded Bengals. That’s why Monday night’s 27-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys was so satisfying. Joe Burrow threw a tiebreaking 40-yard touchdown pass to Ja’Marr Chase with 1:01 left. That was set up by a botched punt block that put the ball back in Cincinnati’s hands with less than two minutes remaining. “I guess I could say luck went our way on this one,” Bengals coach Zac Taylor said. Most every other good thing that happened for Cincinnati (5-8) in snapping a three-game skid was earned. Burrow finished 33 for 44 for 369 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Chase caught 14 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. “We needed this feeling because those last three locker rooms haven’t been like this,” Taylor said. “So just to feel that joy and the week’s worth of work has paid off for you, and then you turn the page and move on to the next one. But it helps you during the week just to have this confidence. He was seen putting a compression sleeve on left knee before returning for the next Bengals possession. Afterward, he said he was fine. “It’s nothing crazy,” he said. “I just landed on it a couple of times. We’ll see. He appeared to view the targeted killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO as a symbolic takedown, asserting in his note that he is the “first to face it with such brutal honesty,” the bulletin said. Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski a “political revolutionary” and may have found inspiration from the man who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology, the document said. A felony warrant filed in New York cites Altoona Officer Christy Wasser as saying she found the writings along with a semi-automatic pistol and an apparent silencer. Carter, who died Sunday at the age of 100, defied the furor of US conservatives to negotiate the handover of the Panama Canal to Panamanian control, suspended aid to multiple authoritarian governments in the region, and even attempted to normalize relations with Cuba. Carter's resolve to chart a course toward democracy and diplomacy, however, was severely tested in Central America and Cuba, where he was forced to balance his human rights priorities with pressure from adversaries to combat the spread of communism amid the Cold War standoff with the Soviet Union. "Latin America was fundamental and his global policy was oriented toward human rights, democratic values and multilateral cooperation," political analyst Michael Shifter of the Inter-American Dialogue, a think tank in Washington, told AFP. During his 1977-1981 administration, which was sandwiched between the Republican presidencies of Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, the Democrat sought to take a step back from US alignment with right-wing dictatorships in Latin America. An important symbol of Carter's approach was the signing of two treaties in 1977 to officially turn over the Panama Canal in 1999. "For us, we always want to go out there every drive and end with a touchdown, so when we don't do that, there's nobody more frustrated than us." Luke Doty did not walk Nov. 23 for South Carolina’s senior day, a strong indication he’d be back on the Gamecocks’ roster in 2025. Doty confirmed that decision Sunday: He’ll return to South Carolina for the 2025 season, which will be his sixth year at USC. “Absolutely,” Doty said when asked after bowl practice if he’d be a Gamecock again for one final season. Doty, who came to South Carolina as a four-star quarterback out of Myrtle Beach High in 2020, has switched positions and seen his playing time decrease almost every year ... and he wants to remain on Shane Beamer’s football team. Heading into the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against Illinois on Tuesday, Doty has appeared in 11 games for South Carolina (starting one) with just three catches for 17 yards. Is it safe? That was the first question Captain Keagan Pang’s mother asked when she found out he was going to be a pilot at a low-cost carrier. The year was 2011, and budget airlines here were expanding and looking to hire. Having developed an interest in aviation after working in the air force and as a cabin crew member at national carrier Singapore Airlines (SIA), Captain Pang did not hesitate to sign up as a cadet at Jetstar Asia, before joining Tiger Airways. Now an associate management pilot with SIA’s low-cost arm Scoot, the 42-year-old has flown all over Asia, from Ipoh in Malaysia to Osaka in Japan. Despite her initial reticence, Captain Pang’s mother has become a regular on budget airlines, too. Fittingly, her most recent trip in 2024 was to Osaka on Scoot. When it took off 20 years ago, the low-cost carrier industry in Singapore was met with fervour by some and doubt by others. But budget airlines have since become an accepted – even essential – part of the aviation landscape, opening up air travel to millions and creating a new breed of travellers . While budget carriers make up about a fifth of the airlines at Changi Airport today, they fly to more than half of the 165 cities that the airport is connected with. The shortest non-stop budget flight from Singapore is 55 minutes to Melaka. The longest is 12 hours to Athens. More than 40 destinations are exclusively served by budget carriers, including Vientiane in Laos and Jeju in South Korea. In the first nine months of 2024, a third of the 49.8 million passengers who passed through Changi Airport flew on low-cost airlines. Mr Ellis Taylor, Asia editor of aviation analytics firm Cirium, said the conventional wisdom in the late 1990s and early 2000s was that Asian travellers would not fly on budget carriers. This has been proven wrong. By cutting costs and offering low fares, they have been able to launch new routes that other airlines wouldn’t have tried, and have played a key role in enabling tourism across Asia and beyond. With thinner margins, low-cost airlines have been among the first to adopt new technology and business models to reduce costs, pushing full-service carriers to rethink their processes and product offerings. AirAsia Malaysia chief executive Fareh Mazputra said the low-cost carrier model has democratised air travel. With a growing middle class expected to fuel greater demand for affordable flights, he and the heads of Singapore-based Scoot and Jetstar Asia believe the sky’s the limit for budget carriers in South-east Asia, even with the challenges that lie ahead. The low-cost carrier wave in Singapore began on May 5, 2004, when a Valuair flight left Changi Airport for Bangkok with 162 passengers on board. It was the first budget flight to be operated by a Singapore carrier, with fares that were 40 per cent to 50 per cent cheaper than full-service ones. Later that year, Tiger Airways – which was set up by SIA Group, Singapore’s investment company Temasek and the founders of Irish no-frills carrier Ryanair – entered the fray. Qantas subsidiary Jetstar Asia joined in too, with its maiden flight on Dec 13, 2004. The three upstarts were inspired by the successes of Southwest Airlines in the United States, and Ryanair and easyJet in Europe. The emergence of AirAsia in 2001 brought the low-cost fever closer to home. Yet, many in the industry remained sceptical about low-cost carriers, as they felt consumers here were not ready for them, said a former airline head who was involved in the launch of budget flights here. Travel was still a luxury in Asia then, and many airlines pitched themselves as delivering a premium service, which came at a high cost and with high fares. But there was, in fact, a hankering for cheaper flights, and the response to the launch of budget flights in Singapore was huge. Weeks before Valuair’s first flights, which were priced at a promotional rate of $138 to Bangkok and $300 to Hong Kong, full-service airlines such as SIA and Cathay Pacific began slashing their fares to keep up. “We proved we could sell at lower fares and turn in operating profits on routes,” said the former airline executive, who declined to be named for this story. By 2007, Jetstar Asia and Tiger Airways, which was later rebranded as Tigerair, had already made it onto the list of Changi Airport’s 10 largest carriers by passenger numbers. By 2009, low-cost carriers accounted for 23 per cent of the airport’s total passenger traffic. While the budget aviation sector has grown over the years, it encountered turbulence along the way. The first storm came shortly after lift-off, as irrational pricing by full-service carriers in response to the competition and expensive fuel made 2005 a tough year for budget airlines. Countries like Indonesia had also shut the door on foreign low-cost carriers, leaving a few crowded regional routes for Singapore carriers to compete on. The first casualty was Valuair, which tried to offer a “mid-cost” alternative by providing some frills such as free hot meals and assigned seating. But it did not have deep-enough pockets, nor could it attract enough investors, leading to its merger with Jetstar Asia in 2005. More turbulence came in the 2010s, after the skies in South-east Asia opened up. Aggressive expansion by low-cost carriers caused markets to be flooded with seats. Fares tumbled, as did earnings, prompting a scaling back of operations and a wave of consolidations and bailouts. The growing proportion of low-cost carrier flights from Changi Airport relative to total flights The rise of budget airlines prompted the development of new airport infrastructure, with the Budget Terminal opening in Singapore in 2006. With no aerobridges and transfer facilities, the no-frills single-storey terminal at Changi was meant to help budget carriers save on airport costs. Two years later, a $10 million expansion more than doubled the terminal’s capacity from 2.7 million to seven million passengers a year. In 2012, a decision was made to redevelop the Budget Terminal into the larger Terminal 4. Mr Lim Ching Kiat, Changi Airport Group’s (CAG) executive vice-president for air hub and cargo development, said this was because the cost savings for low-cost carriers at the Budget Terminal were marginal, and passengers wanted a consistent experience at the airport. Budget airlines in Singapore started to fly farther as well. In 2010, Jetstar Asia’s sister airline Jetstar Airways started flying non-stop to Melbourne. Two years later, SIA launched Scoot to serve medium and long-haul routes. In 2017, Tigerair merged with Scoot to capture a greater share of the low-cost market. Scoot’s first European service to Athens started the same year. A recent trend has been the arrival of North-east Asian low-cost carriers at Changi Airport, such as South Korea’s Jeju Air and Japan’s Zipair. The latest additions are Air Japan and Peach Aviation, both subsidiaries of full-service carrier All Nippon Airways. With the liberalisation of air service agreements and low-cost airlines buying new narrow-body aircraft with longer ranges, CAG’s Mr Lim expects the growth of such carriers in Singapore to continue. “Because of our location, we can actually access a bigger market, such as the northern parts of India and China, and Central Asia,” he said. As acceptance of low-cost carriers has grown, the mix of passengers on board has become more varied. Expectations have changed too. “In the early days, there was this misperception about low-cost airlines being less safe. But over time, people have seen, and the track record has proven, that this is untrue,” said Scoot’s Captain Pang. Mr Lim said the stereotype that budget airlines are only for travellers on a shoestring is also no longer true, citing the example of Zipair, which offers lie-flat seats on its red-eye Singapore-Tokyo flights, a feature more commonly associated with premium airlines. “My take is that people are more savvy these days,” he added. Ms Florence Chan, 38, who joined Scoot as a cabin crew member in 2012, said she still gets questions from passengers about the lack of certain amenities on flights, but these have become less common. She and other cabin crew members noted that no-frills does not mean no service. Ms Mei Ng, 49, who has been working as a cabin crew member for 19 years, first with Valuair and then with Jetstar Asia, said: “We’ve had parents request milk, passengers needing earplugs, or even asking for unexpected items like sanitary napkins – all of which we do our best to accommodate.” Scoot chief executive Leslie Thng said customers are becoming more sophisticated, which is why low-cost carriers now offer different ways to bundle ancillary services, such as checked baggage and in-flight meals. There has also been a move towards self-service options. Mr Thng said Scoot is using technology and data in all facets of its operations – from improving sales to simplifying work processes for staff. Generative artificial intelligence is also a big trend, with both Scoot and AirAsia using it to give their customer chatbots a boost. Mr Kenji Soh, general manager at corporate travel management company FCM Travel South-east Asia, said low-cost carriers have started offering products aimed at corporate travellers, including quiet zones and business class. Pointing to a 13 per cent increase in low-cost bookings on FCM Travel’s platform, he said there is a trend of companies incorporating budget carriers into their travel policies for shorter flights. In the past 20 years, there has also been a growing convergence between the low-cost and full-service models, giving rise to more hybrid airlines. For example, while traditional low-cost carriers would not facilitate passengers transferring between flights or between other airlines, this is now the norm in Asia, Mr Taylor from Cirium said. Jetstar Asia was the first to do this here, and it now has interline and codeshare agreements with more than 40 carriers out of Singapore, including Emirates and KLM. This has allowed the budget airline to grow beyond the reach of its own direct customers. Scoot is taking a similar approach with SIA. “We don't have a domestic market, so transit traffic is also very important for us,” Mr Thng said, noting that transfer passengers now make up about a quarter of Scoot’s traffic. Legacy airlines too have adopted parts of the low-cost carrier playbook, such as charging passengers for ancillary services. Mr Taylor said this convergence will most likely continue as airlines adapt to the needs of different markets. This could mean more budget carriers adopting a frequent flier programme and offering business class cabins to compete against traditional carriers. While the Covid-19 pandemic dealt low-cost carriers a major blow, budget airlines in Singapore have bounced back from that. Between January and September, budget airline passenger traffic at Changi Airport was 101.6 per cent of 2019 levels. With Covid-19 in the rear-view mirror, the sector is now looking at growth. Mr Thng said he sees immense potential in South-east Asia, which he views as Scoot’s hinterland. Scoot has focused on shorter hops within the region in 2024, with the roll-out of its new Embraer E190-E2 jets. But the airline wants to grow its medium- and long-haul network too, pending the delivery of more wide-body Boeing 787s. AirAsia’s Captain Fareh said Singapore contributes significantly to the carrier’s overall passenger load, and the goal is to also expand its network here. Growing the airline’s fleet would allow it to increase flight frequencies from the Republic, the former pilot added. At a regional level, AirAsia has ambitions of turning its Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok bases into low-cost Dubai-like hubs. It is also eyeing global expansion, with plans to launch routes to Africa, Europe and the US by 2030. For Jetstar Asia, which has been slower to recover from the pandemic, the aim is to gain a firmer footing after the airline almost doubled its fleet from seven to 13 aircraft in two years. While it is still short of the 18 jets that it had before Covid-19, Jetstar Asia chief executive John Simeone said the airline is making sure its current network is profitable. He said the competitive environment within South-east Asia is intense, and Jetstar Asia, like all airlines, faces challenges such as volatility in fuel prices and broader geopolitical tensions. With revenge travel coming off the boil, demand is likely to slow too. Other headwinds include supply chain snags, which have delayed plane deliveries and grounded existing ones, and sustainable aviation fuel mandates, which will drive costs up. While Singapore will continue to play a key role in the growth of low-cost carriers in the region, airlines have highlighted several challenges operating here too. The biggest concern is Changi’s costs, which are set to rise further over the next six years. Jetstar Asia’s Mr Simeone said this may impact the number of tickets that the airline can sell below $100, which now make up about two-thirds of all its flights. The difficulty in securing take-off and landing slots at Changi is another issue, and Captain Fareh believes slot availability at the airport can be better optimised. Peach Aviation’s chief corporate planning officer Satoru Endo said he hopes that Changi Airport’s capacity will be expanded, so the airline can mount more flights in the future. “Since Singapore is a popular and busy destination in terms of airport traffic, it is not very easy to get our desired slot,” he added. A related question that has come up is whether there is room for another Singapore-based low-cost carrier. This is after AirAsia founder Tony Fernandes told the Malaysian media in September that the carrier will not give up on securing an airline licence in Singapore, despite having been rejected thrice. Asked about Changi Airport’s capacity for more budget carriers, CAG’s Mr Lim said the airport is committed to working with its existing carriers so they continue to grow, and it is happy to partner with other airlines to drive traffic and expand its network. In response to a similar query, and about whether there is room for another local budget carrier here, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) said only that it will continue to work with CAG to support all airlines that are committed to the Singapore air hub.
