In this context, we’re using the term telematics to refer to devices capable of vehicle tracking. Telematics are typically installed in vehicles so they can collect and transmit data related to how those vehicles are being operated. Depending on the nature of the device, it may collect data based on speed, acceleration, sudden changes in trajectory, inputs by the operator, and more. The obvious benefit of this is that insurance companies, employers, and other authorities can retrieve information and use it to analyze what happened in the event of an incident. If a vehicle is involved in an accident, telematics data can tell you whether the operator of the vehicle made a mistake and detail the root causes of that accident. Telematics are often, but not always, associated with dashcams. Dashcams are video cameras that typically capture a running stream of footage, which can be reviewed in the event of an incident. They can be placed at the front and rear of the vehicle for a complete picture of the vehicle’s surroundings at all times. A Picture of Telematics in Business Businesses have been quick to adopt telematics as part of their fleet vehicle management strategy. Whenever there’s an accident, investigators must determine, objectively, what happened . This isn’t always easy to do, but with telematics devices installed in every vehicle, it becomes much easier. While there may be fringe cases where it’s difficult to determine exactly what happened, most accidents can be resolutely investigated with a simple dive into the data. Minimal costs. Telematics devices are advanced forms of technology, but they aren’t especially expensive. Compared to the safety benefits, the costs are trivial, and most people (and entities) would be willing to pay them. Minimal invasiveness. Similarly, telematics are minimally invasive. Most people won’t even notice that they’re there. Unlike other forms of safety technology, telematics generally remain in the territory of “out of sight, out of mind.” The Issues However, there are some issues to consider as well. How reliable is this technology? Telematics data is generally considered to be reliable . However, when there are thousands or even millions of dollars on the line, even slight deviations in data projections can have a big impact. If we’re going to include telematics in every vehicle, we need to make absolutely certain that there are reliable sources of objective data. Who pays? Telematics devices are relatively inexpensive, but they aren’t free. If telematics are going to be included in your vehicle, are you the one that’s going to pay for this technology? Would your insurance company pay to have telematics installed in your vehicle? Would this be a sunk cost for manufacturers? Whose consent is needed? And what would these consent forms look like? What about older vehicles? Assume that we start including telematics in every new vehicle sold. Would we require people with older vehicles to install telematics in those vehicles? What if they resist? What if people use a non-requirement as a loophole to avoid dealing with telematics altogether? What about privacy? Privacy is a significant concern when it comes to technologies like telematics. How much do we care about consumer privacy? And how do we weigh those privacy concerns against safety concerns? These are not easy questions to answer. The Bottom Line Is it possible that we’ll one day have telematics in every vehicle? This is a major possibility, especially if we can figure out how to mitigate some of the issues in play. However, given public distaste for privacy invasiveness and the general sluggish pace of widespread regulations and norm changes, it’s unlikely that telematics will be installed in every vehicle anytime soon. For the time being, telematics will primarily belong in the realm of commercial fleet vehicles. As things currently stand, the Penguins don’t really have a boss. Sure, Fenway is in charge, but who’s calling the shots? Is John Henry analyzing the lack of production from the power play? Is Tom Werner worked up about the bad defensive zone coverage? Is Teddy Werner taking notes on Tristan Jarry ’s glove hand? Honestly, I don’t know. And I don’t mean to mock. They actually all seem like very nice people, and I mean that sincerely. But that’s the thing about FSG: They’re so, so corporate. And they aren’t hockey people. What this means is Sullivan’s fate is very much in the hands of Dubas. The Penguins don’t really have a boss in terms of ownership. Mario Lemieux might have been the most hands-off owner imaginable, but he was still the boss and made certain decisions. And kept everyone accountable because of who he was. Dubas, frankly, has more power than anyone in the organization by a long shot. I think Dubas likes Sullivan a lot and thinks he’s a great coach. I’d also note Dubas, more than anyone, seemed very interested in squashing optimism before the season at his press conference. I think he knew there was a real chance this team wouldn’t be very good and thus Sullivan probably was expected to survive this season. While I assure you I wrote about the comments from Sullivan that I found to be the most interesting and revealing, I’ve had a few days to consider his mood, his mindset and everything he said. If anything annoys Sullivan, it’s the perception that he doesn’t make in-game or in-season adjustments. He’s very sensitive to this. • Do the Penguins continually make the same mistakes in the defense zone? Absolutely. Do their special teams give them an edge on a regular, or even occasion basis? Absolutely not. Do the Penguins look stale? Absolutely. Put it all together, and you’ve got a splendid recipe for a coach firing. It’s undeniable. I will say this for Sullivan: His intensity and passion remain the same as they’ve ever been. This isn’t a coach who is mailing it in, or who isn’t going out of his way to ignite his team. He’s doing everything. Lineup changes. Hard practices. Days off. Benching Hall of Fame defensemen from the power play. Putting his future Hall of Fame centers on the same line. Lately, the Penguins have adopted more of a defensive posture. They were better defensively (baby steps) against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Winnipeg Jets , but it came at the expense of the Penguins’ ability to generate offense. I think it’s unfair to suggest Sullivan never changes. He’s never changed more than he has this season. Advertisement The problem is, of course, that it isn’t working. • The number of people in the Penguins organization who were disturbed by Crosby dropping the gloves on Friday against Winnipeg is high. Don’t take this the wrong way — no one has a problem with Crosby fighting. He’s a competitor of extreme measures and sometimes he fights. Fair enough. What people in the organization are troubled by is the reality that even at 37, Crosby is left to fight his own battles. The same can be said of Evgeni Malkin , 38, and Kris Letang , 37. One source in the organization told me, “If I played on the third or fourth line, saw Sid fight, and did nothing, I’d be (expletive) ashamed of myself.” Many people in the organization feel this way and are upset about the lack of fight this team displays on a regular basis. • I’d expect Tristan Jarry to keep playing on a regular basis. While he’s 0-2-1 since making his return to the lineup — and he’s given up 11 goals in those three games — the prevailing sentiment in the organization is that some progress has been made. Jarry allowed five goals in his return from Wilkes-Barre against the Blue Jackets , but the Penguins were so hideous defensively that game that the organization was very much willing to give the goaltender a pass. He’s been better since then, allowing three goals apiece against the Lightning and Jets, two of the NHL’s more gifted offensive teams. While Brayden Point ’s overtime goal was undeniably a bad look — Jarry’s penchant for allowing goals on the first shot of the game, something that’s remarkably happened in four of his six appearances this season, can’t be ignored, either — the Penguins think Jarry looks sharper and is in a clearer mindset now than he was in October. How he will play moving forward is anyone’s guess, and gauging Penguins goalies isn’t easy simply because of the horrific defense being played in front of them. But the Penguins want to find out if Jarry has a future with them, or can be potentially used as a trade piece down the road, once and for all. The 2022 first-round pick has dealt with some health setbacks but very much impressed the coaching staff with his performance during training camp. So far, he’s been one of the Penguins’ most steady defensemen. The sample size is small, but there is a mounting belief in the organization that Pickering is going to become a very good NHL player. There’s a chance he will return to Wilkes-Barre, but I’d bet on him seeing the majority of this season in Pittsburgh. The Penguins really like him and they’re very much aware of how dreadful their blue line has been. • The number of season-ticket holders I’ve heard from in recent days is staggering. Sunday’s 30-7 rout of the New York Giants began a six-game, regular season-ending stretch in which the Bucs (5-6) will face five opponents that currently have losing records. The victory coming out of the team’s bye week stopped a four-game skid and moved the three-time defending NFC South champions within one game of first-place Atlanta in the division. The Falcons swept the season series, so the Bucs essentially trail the Falcons by two games with six remaining. They’re in a good position to chase their fifth consecutive playoff berth, but can hardly assume they’ll benefit from having an easy remaining schedule. “We’re hoping it builds confidence. We have belief that we’re still sitting and controlling our own destiny,” quarterback Baker Mayfield said of beating the Giants. “But it’s not just going to happen,” Mayfield added. “So, we have to take it one week at a time. And you find the recipe for success within your work week. ... You try to emulate that week after week and continue to build it.” The Los Angeles Chargers, who entered Monday night’s game against Baltimore at 7-3, are the only opponent remaining on Tampa Bay’s schedule that currently has a winning record. The Bucs will face division rival Carolina (3-8) twice in the next six weeks. "This is a global stage for us to demonstrate GM’s engineering expertise and technology leadership at an entirely new level.” The approval ends years of wrangling that launched a U.S. Justice Department investigation into why Colorado-based Liberty Media, the commercial rights holder of F1, would not approve the team initially started by Michael Andretti. Andretti in September stepped aside from leading his namesake organization, so the 11th team will be called Cadillac F1 and be run by new Andretti Global majority owners Dan Towriss and Mark Walter. The team will use Ferrari engines its first two years until GM has a Cadillac engine built for competition in time for the 2028 season. Towriss is the the CEO and president of Group 1001 and entered motorsports via Andretti's IndyCar team when he signed on financial savings platform Gainbridge as a sponsor. Jones died unexpectedly Dec. 7. Her age was not available and no information on her cause of death released. A memorial service is being planned for Jan. 4 at Elgin Community College. “Risé was a charismatic community leader with boundless enthusiasm and passion for the community and the multitude of organizations she supported,” said Carol Gieske, president and CEO of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce. “Her gregarious nature and infectious laughter made her an impactful mentor, leader, volunteer, influencer and colleague, touching the lives of everyone she encountered.” The chamber honored Jones earlier this year with a Volunteer of the Year award for her contributions to the community, Gieske said. She was a chamber board member for three years and was to start another year Jan. 1. “We are immensely grateful for Risé’s dynamic leadership and contributions,” Gieske said. “She excelled in program development and collaboration, creating our Bridges program to support Black- and brown-owned small businesses. Through her leadership and community-building skills, she created a vision of a vibrant Elgin, celebrating and engaging businesses and entrepreneurs that reflect our city’s cultural, ethnic and racial diversity.” Jones founded Hamilton Wings with her mother, the late Ann Jones, then a District U-46 elementary school principal, in 1996. It was named in the memory of her father, psychologist Charles Hamilton Jones. Hamilton Wings is a “collaborative self-esteem enrichment program for children to promote self-awareness, self-expression and responsibility to self and others through exposure to the arts,” Jones wrote on her LinkedIn page. According to the organization’s website, “it offers educational workshops and cultural enrichment programs. Its mission is for all children to participate and appreciate the arts and contribute their voices to the cultural landscape.” A post left on Hamilton Wings’ Facebook page lauded Jones for her accomplishments. Her “generosity, love, and joy for the community and children of it could not be matched,” the post said. “To say she will be missed would be an understatement, but we hope her spirit and the joy she brought can continue to be shared through all the lives she has impacted.” She was also a partner/evaluator for Evaluation Solutions Inc., a position she started in 2001. The business “develops services that facilitate capacity building and effective, integrated organizational solutions,” her LinkedIn profile said. Jones served on the Elgin Community College Board of Trustees from 2012-13 and was a senior research specialist at the University of Illinois Chicago from 1998 to 2010. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and her doctorate in public policy analysis from the University of Illinios and her master’s degree in public management and policy from Carnegie Mellon University. Increasingly, consumers are relying on these technologies as well. Is there a conceivable future in which every vehicle is equipped with similar technologies? And what would that future look like in terms of safety and privacy? The Basics of Telematics Telematics is a term that refers to a collection of technologies that collect, transmit, and analyze data from various objects. In this context, we’re using the term telematics to refer to devices capable of vehicle tracking. Telematics are typically installed in vehicles so they can collect and transmit data related to how those vehicles are being operated. Depending on the nature of the device, it may collect data based on speed, acceleration, sudden changes in trajectory, inputs by the operator, and more. The obvious benefit of this is that insurance companies, employers, and other authorities can retrieve information and use it to analyze what happened in the event of an incident. If a vehicle is involved in an accident, telematics data can tell you whether the operator of the vehicle made a mistake and detail the root causes of that accident. Telematics are often, but not always, associated with dashcams. Dashcams are video cameras that typically capture a running stream of footage, which can be reviewed in the event of an incident. They can be placed at the front and rear of the vehicle for a complete picture of the vehicle’s surroundings at all times. A Picture of Telematics in Business Businesses have been quick to adopt telematics as part of their fleet vehicle management strategy. For example, construction businesses strongly benefit from dashcams and telematics in their vehicles and equipment . With the use of this equipment, business owners can mitigate risk and bring more objective data to the table if any of their vehicles are ever involved in an accident. Knowledge of telematics and dashcams in vehicles also serves as an incentive for operators to operate these vehicles and pieces of equipment more safely. For construction businesses, this is an especially powerful advantage, because there are so many different types of vehicles and pieces of equipment that are crucial for the business’s success. These relatively inexpensive pieces of technology can save businesses money in terms of risk mitigation, insurance savings, increases in productivity, and much more. Why Would We Consider Telematics in Every Vehicle? The benefits for a construction business are obvious. The same is true for almost any business that manages a fleet of vehicles. But why would we even consider the possibility of including telematics in every vehicle? Safety and behavioral changes. Arguably the best benefit is higher safety on the roads. If people knew they had telematics devices transmitting data about how their vehicle is being operated, they would be incentivized to operate their vehicles much more safely. Even if this effect is minimal, it could save lives – and millions, if not billions of dollars. Insurance costs. Telematics data could also mitigate insurance costs in some ways. With safer roads and greater accountability for individuals who are at fault, we could greatly decrease insurance premiums for most people. Objective data. Whenever there’s an accident, investigators must determine, objectively, what happened . This isn’t always easy to do, but with telematics devices installed in every vehicle, it becomes much easier. While there may be fringe cases where it’s difficult to determine exactly what happened, most accidents can be resolutely investigated with a simple dive into the data. Minimal costs. Telematics devices are advanced forms of technology, but they aren’t especially expensive. Compared to the safety benefits, the costs are trivial, and most people (and entities) would be willing to pay them. Minimal invasiveness. Similarly, telematics are minimally invasive. Most people won’t even notice that they’re there. Unlike other forms of safety technology, telematics generally remain in the territory of “out of sight, out of mind.” The Issues However, there are some issues to consider as well. How reliable is this technology? Telematics data is generally considered to be reliable . However, when there are thousands or even millions of dollars on the line, even slight deviations in data projections can have a big impact. If we’re going to include telematics in every vehicle, we need to make absolutely certain that there are reliable sources of objective data. Who pays? Telematics devices are relatively inexpensive, but they aren’t free. If telematics are going to be included in your vehicle, are you the one that’s going to pay for this technology? Would your insurance company pay to have telematics installed in your vehicle? Would this be a sunk cost for manufacturers? Whose consent is needed? Generally, we require individual consent before an individual can have their data tracked and utilized by another entity. Would we require consumers to consent to have their data transmitted? And what would these consent forms look like? What about older vehicles? Assume that we start including telematics in every new vehicle sold. Would we require people with older vehicles to install telematics in those vehicles? What if they resist? What if people use a non-requirement as a loophole to avoid dealing with telematics altogether? What about privacy? Privacy is a significant concern when it comes to technologies like telematics. How much do we care about consumer privacy? And how do we weigh those privacy concerns against safety concerns? These are not easy questions to answer. The Bottom Line Is it possible that we’ll one day have telematics in every vehicle? This is a major possibility, especially if we can figure out how to mitigate some of the issues in play. However, given public distaste for privacy invasiveness and the general sluggish pace of widespread regulations and norm changes, it’s unlikely that telematics will be installed in every vehicle anytime soon. For the time being, telematics will primarily belong in the realm of commercial fleet vehicles. According to Poonsak Chanchampi, a committee member and People's Party MP, the ministers were called on to provide more information relating to the dispute, as they oversee the Department of Land (DoL) and State Railway of Thailand (SRT) -- the parties involved in the dispute. He said the House committee also wants to hear from the transport minister how the SRT plans to proceed to reclaim the plots, which span 5,083 rai in the Khao Kradong area in Buri Ram's Muang district. The rail agency has accused the DoL of wrongfully issuing land titles to individuals who are illegally occupying the plots. The Supreme Court ruled in favour of the SRT in the dispute, and the Administrative Court has also ordered the DoL to work with the rail agency to review the plots' boundaries. However, the DoL's land committee, which was formed under Section 61 of the Land Code to probe the issuing of land papers for the disputed plots, decided against revoking the land titles. The SRT is appealing its decision. Mr Poonsak said the House committee will review the decision of the DoL's land committee to determine whether the land committee has the power to suspend the revocation of land ownership despite the court ruling. He said the House committee is aware of public concerns about intervention by local officials to protect the interests of an influential political clan in Buri Ram, so the committee will also look into possible violations of the law, such as abuse of power. Mr Poonsak said the disputed plots should be returned to the state to comply with the Supreme Court's ruling, which said the land belongs to the SRT and the occupants can continue using the plots by making lease payments to the SRT. He said while the SRT can file a lawsuit against each occupant to reclaim the land, the process will be too lengthy. It is reported that about 900 people are living on the land. Poonsak: Aware of public concernsTick, tick, tick ... The Penguins are a disaster, having won only four games in regulation with Thanksgiving a few days away. Their goal differential is a baffling minus-34, worst in the NHL , seven goals clear of San Jose . All of which brings us to the head coach. Mike Sullivan entered the season being viewed by many in the organization as bulletproof, for many reasons: • Those two Stanley Cup rings loom large. Advertisement • He has a particularly close relationship with Sidney Crosby , who very much believes in Sullivan. • Fenway Sports Group ownership has a fondness for Sullivan. • Sullivan has two years remaining on his contract following this season, and while Fenway might have a lot of money, the ownership group is oddly stingy with money at times, leading many to believe FSG wouldn’t be interested in paying for two head coaches for the better part of two seasons. • And maybe the biggest of all: Expectations were low this season anyway, with many in the organization figuring this team would miss the playoffs given it’s in a transitional period. So, is Sullivan in trouble? The above evidence would suggest he’s not. But the truth is only Kyle Dubas truly knows, which is a very interesting part of this situation. As things currently stand, the Penguins don’t really have a boss. Sure, Fenway is in charge, but who’s calling the shots? Is John Henry analyzing the lack of production from the power play? Is Tom Werner worked up about the bad defensive zone coverage? Is Teddy Werner taking notes on Tristan Jarry ’s glove hand? Honestly, I don’t know. And I don’t mean to mock. They actually all seem like very nice people, and I mean that sincerely. But that’s the thing about FSG: They’re so, so corporate. And they aren’t hockey people. What this means is Sullivan’s fate is very much in the hands of Dubas. The Penguins don’t really have a boss in terms of ownership. Mario Lemieux might have been the most hands-off owner imaginable, but he was still the boss and made certain decisions. And kept everyone accountable because of who he was. Dubas, frankly, has more power than anyone in the organization by a long shot. I think Dubas likes Sullivan a lot and thinks he’s a great coach. I’d also note Dubas, more than anyone, seemed very interested in squashing optimism before the season at his press conference. I think he knew there was a real chance this team wouldn’t be very good and thus Sullivan probably was expected to survive this season. Advertisement The question is, how poorly do the Penguins have to play for Sullivan to get fired? I’m sure there is a point where Dubas will say enough is enough. No coach, not even Sullivan, is immune from being dismissed. The Penguins are horrific right now. My sense all along, however, has been that Dubas and ownership don’t hold Sullivan responsible for what’s going on. So, sure, he could get fired. But I think the Penguins view that as a last resort. And I don’t think they truly want to let him go. • I sat down with Sullivan for a one-on-one interview last week . While I assure you I wrote about the comments from Sullivan that I found to be the most interesting and revealing, I’ve had a few days to consider his mood, his mindset and everything he said. If anything annoys Sullivan, it’s the perception that he doesn’t make in-game or in-season adjustments. He’s very sensitive to this. • Do the Penguins continually make the same mistakes in the defense zone? Absolutely. Do their special teams give them an edge on a regular, or even occasion basis? Absolutely not. Do the Penguins look stale? Absolutely. Put it all together, and you’ve got a splendid recipe for a coach firing. It’s undeniable. I will say this for Sullivan: His intensity and passion remain the same as they’ve ever been. This isn’t a coach who is mailing it in, or who isn’t going out of his way to ignite his team. He’s doing everything. Lineup changes. Hard practices. Days off. Benching Hall of Fame defensemen from the power play. Putting his future Hall of Fame centers on the same line. Lately, the Penguins have adopted more of a defensive posture. They were better defensively (baby steps) against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Winnipeg Jets , but it came at the expense of the Penguins’ ability to generate offense. I think it’s unfair to suggest Sullivan never changes. He’s never changed more than he has this season. Advertisement The problem is, of course, that it isn’t working. • The number of people in the Penguins organization who were disturbed by Crosby dropping the gloves on Friday against Winnipeg is high. Don’t take this the wrong way — no one has a problem with Crosby fighting. He’s a competitor of extreme measures and sometimes he fights. Fair enough. What people in the organization are troubled by is the reality that even at 37, Crosby is left to fight his own battles. The same can be said of Evgeni Malkin , 38, and Kris Letang , 37. One source in the organization told me, “If I played on the third or fourth line, saw Sid fight, and did nothing, I’d be (expletive) ashamed of myself.” Many people in the organization feel this way and are upset about the lack of fight this team displays on a regular basis. • I’d expect Tristan Jarry to keep playing on a regular basis. While he’s 0-2-1 since making his return to the lineup — and he’s given up 11 goals in those three games — the prevailing sentiment in the organization is that some progress has been made. Jarry allowed five goals in his return from Wilkes-Barre against the Blue Jackets , but the Penguins were so hideous defensively that game that the organization was very much willing to give the goaltender a pass. He’s been better since then, allowing three goals apiece against the Lightning and Jets, two of the NHL’s more gifted offensive teams. While Brayden Point ’s overtime goal was undeniably a bad look — Jarry’s penchant for allowing goals on the first shot of the game, something that’s remarkably happened in four of his six appearances this season, can’t be ignored, either — the Penguins think Jarry looks sharper and is in a clearer mindset now than he was in October. How he will play moving forward is anyone’s guess, and gauging Penguins goalies isn’t easy simply because of the horrific defense being played in front of them. But the Penguins want to find out if Jarry has a future with them, or can be potentially used as a trade piece down the road, once and for all. Advertisement • The organization is delighted with what it has seen from Owen Pickering . The 2022 first-round pick has dealt with some health setbacks but very much impressed the coaching staff with his performance during training camp. So far, he’s been one of the Penguins’ most steady defensemen. The sample size is small, but there is a mounting belief in the organization that Pickering is going to become a very good NHL player. There’s a chance he will return to Wilkes-Barre, but I’d bet on him seeing the majority of this season in Pittsburgh. The Penguins really like him and they’re very much aware of how dreadful their blue line has been. • The number of season-ticket holders I’ve heard from in recent days is staggering. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are determined to not get ahead of themselves. Sunday’s 30-7 rout of the New York Giants began a six-game, regular season-ending stretch in which the Bucs (5-6) will face five opponents that currently have losing records. The victory coming out of the team’s bye week stopped a four-game skid and moved the three-time defending NFC South champions within one game of first-place Atlanta in the division. The Falcons swept the season series, so the Bucs essentially trail the Falcons by two games with six remaining. They’re in a good position to chase their fifth consecutive playoff berth, but can hardly assume they’ll benefit from having an easy remaining schedule. “We’re hoping it builds confidence. We have belief that we’re still sitting and controlling our own destiny,” quarterback Baker Mayfield said of beating the Giants. “But it’s not just going to happen,” Mayfield added. “So, we have to take it one week at a time. And you find the recipe for success within your work week. ... You try to emulate that week after week and continue to build it.” The Los Angeles Chargers, who entered Monday night’s game against Baltimore at 7-3, are the only opponent remaining on Tampa Bay’s schedule that currently has a winning record. The Bucs will face division rival Carolina (3-8) twice in the next six weeks. They’ll also host Las Vegas (2-9) and New Orleans (4-7) and play the Chargers and Dallas Cowboys (4-7) on the road. “We can’t get comfortable,” rookie running back Bucky Irving said. “We just got to keep our foot on the gas and keep running.” The offense continues to put up big numbers, finishing with 450 yards against the Giants. It’s the fifth time Tampa Bay has gained more than 400 yards this season. The Bucs have now scored 30-plus points six times, second in the NFL behind Buffalo’s eight. A former second-round pick (No. 34 overall in 2018) who played four years of college ball at Kansas, Graham had some productive seasons with the Hornets during his first few years in the NBA, including a strong 2019/20 campaign in which he averaged 18.2 points, 7.5 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.0 steal per game with a .373 3PT% across 63 outings (35.1 MPG). However, the six-year veteran saw his playing time decline in recent years as he moved on to the Pelicans and then the Spurs, only appearing in 23 games and averaging a career-low 13.6 MPG for San Antonio last season. Graham was traded back to Charlotte in a salary-dump deal over the summer, was subsequently waived, and then spent training camp and the preseason on a non-guaranteed contract with the Trail Blazers before being cut again. There were rumors in October that Graham would head overseas and play for the Shanghai Sharks in China, but that never came to fruition. Instead, the 29-year-old will remain stateside, catching on with the Lakers’ G League squad ahead of the league’s Winter Showcase in Orlando next week. The No. 1 Gamecocks fell Sunday in Los Angeles as Lauren Betts posted a double-double effort to lead No. 5 UCLA to a 77-62 triumph. The Gamecocks (5-1) suffered their first defeat after 43 consecutive victories, dating back to the loss to Iowa 77-73 in the NCAA Tournament semifinals. South Carolina defeated Iowa last season for the national championship. Betts finished with 11 points, a game-high 14 rebounds, four assists and four blocks to power the Bruins (5-0) to a historic victory. Formula 1 on Monday at last said it will expand its grid in 2026 to make room for an American team that is partnered with General Motors. “As the pinnacle of motorsports, F1 demands boundary-pushing innovation and excellence. It’s an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world’s premier racing series, and we’re committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world," GM President Mark Reuss said. "This is a global stage for us to demonstrate GM’s engineering expertise and technology leadership at an entirely new level.” The approval ends years of wrangling that launched a U.S. Justice Department investigation into why Colorado-based Liberty Media, the commercial rights holder of F1, would not approve the team initially started by Michael Andretti. Andretti in September stepped aside from leading his namesake organization, so the 11th team will be called Cadillac F1 and be run by new Andretti Global majority owners Dan Towriss and Mark Walter. The team will use Ferrari engines its first two years until GM has a Cadillac engine built for competition in time for the 2028 season. Towriss is the the CEO and president of Group 1001 and entered motorsports via Andretti's IndyCar team when he signed on financial savings platform Gainbridge as a sponsor. Towriss is now a major part of the motorsports scene with ownership stakes in both Spire Motorsports' NASCAR team and Wayne Taylor Racing's sports car team. But his son, Michael, will have no official position with the organization now that he has scaled back his involvement with Andretti Global. “The Cadillac F1 Team is made up of a strong group of people that have worked tirelessly to build an American works team,” Michael Andretti posted on social media. “I’m very proud of the hard work they have put in and congratulate all involved on this momentous next step. I will be cheering for you!” The approval has been in works for weeks but was held until after last weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix to not overshadow the showcase event of the Liberty Media portfolio. Max Verstappen won his fourth consecutive championship in Saturday night's race, the third and final stop in the United States for the top motorsports series in the world. Grid expansion in F1 is both infrequent and often unsuccessful. Four teams were granted entries in 2010 that should have pushed the grid to 13 teams and 26 cars for the first time since 1995. One team never made it to the grid and the other three had vanished by 2017. There is only one American team on the current F1 grid — owned by California businessman Gene Haas — but it is not particularly competitive and does not field American drivers. Andretti’s dream was to field a truly American team with American drivers. The fight to add this team has been going on for three-plus years and F1 initially denied the application despite approval from F1 sanctioning body FIA. The existing 10 teams, who have no voice in the matter, also largely opposed expansion because of the dilution in prize money and the billions of dollars they’ve already invested in the series. Andretti in 2020 tried and failed to buy the existing Sauber team. From there, he applied for grid expansion and partnered with GM, the top-selling manufacturer in the United States. The inclusion of GM was championed by the FIA and president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who said Michael Andretti’s application was the only one of seven applicants to meet all required criteria to expand F1’s current grid. “General Motors is a huge global brand and powerhouse in the OEM world and is working with impressive partners," Ben Sulayem said Monday. "I am fully supportive of the efforts made by the FIA, Formula 1, GM and the team to maintain dialogue and work towards this outcome of an agreement in principle to progress this application." Despite the FIA's acceptance of Andretti and General Motors from the start, F1 wasn't interested in Andretti — but did want GM. At one point, F1 asked GM to find another team to partner with besides Andretti. GM refused and F1 said it would revisit the Andretti application if and when Cadillac had an engine ready to compete. “Formula 1 has maintained a dialogue with General Motors, and its partners at TWG Global, regarding the viability of an entry following the commercial assessment and decision made by Formula 1 in January 2024,” F1 said in a statement. “Over the course of this year, they have achieved operational milestones and made clear their commitment to brand the 11th team GM/Cadillac, and that GM will enter as an engine supplier at a later time. Formula 1 is therefore pleased to move forward with this application process." Jones died unexpectedly Dec. 7. Her age was not available and no information on her cause of death released. A memorial service is being planned for Jan. 4 at Elgin Community College. “Risé was a charismatic community leader with boundless enthusiasm and passion for the community and the multitude of organizations she supported,” said Carol Gieske, president and CEO of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce. “Her gregarious nature and infectious laughter made her an impactful mentor, leader, volunteer, influencer and colleague, touching the lives of everyone she encountered.” The chamber honored Jones earlier this year with a Volunteer of the Year award for her contributions to the community, Gieske said. She was a chamber board member for three years and was to start another year Jan. 1. “We are immensely grateful for Risé’s dynamic leadership and contributions,” Gieske said. “She excelled in program development and collaboration, creating our Bridges program to support Black- and brown-owned small businesses. Through her leadership and community-building skills, she created a vision of a vibrant Elgin, celebrating and engaging businesses and entrepreneurs that reflect our city’s cultural, ethnic and racial diversity.” Jones founded Hamilton Wings with her mother, the late Ann Jones, then a District U-46 elementary school principal, in 1996. It was named in the memory of her father, psychologist Charles Hamilton Jones. Hamilton Wings is a “collaborative self-esteem enrichment program for children to promote self-awareness, self-expression and responsibility to self and others through exposure to the arts,” Jones wrote on her LinkedIn page. According to the organization’s website, “it offers educational workshops and cultural enrichment programs. Its mission is for all children to participate and appreciate the arts and contribute their voices to the cultural landscape.” A post left on Hamilton Wings’ Facebook page lauded Jones for her accomplishments. Her “generosity, love, and joy for the community and children of it could not be matched,” the post said. “To say she will be missed would be an understatement, but we hope her spirit and the joy she brought can continue to be shared through all the lives she has impacted.” She was also a partner/evaluator for Evaluation Solutions Inc., a position she started in 2001. The business “develops services that facilitate capacity building and effective, integrated organizational solutions,” her LinkedIn profile said. Jones served on the Elgin Community College Board of Trustees from 2012-13 and was a senior research specialist at the University of Illinois Chicago from 1998 to 2010. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and her doctorate in public policy analysis from the University of Illinios and her master’s degree in public management and policy from Carnegie Mellon University. In Elgin, she was active with several organizations, including the YWCA Elgin, where she served on the board of directors and was honored with a Leader Luncheon Award. “The loss of Risé will be felt deeply, not only within our organization but across the Elgin community she served so passionately,” the YWCA posted on social media. “She was a beacon of hope and a role model for leadership, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire us to continue the work she held so dear.” Gloria Casas is a freelance reporter for The Courier-News.
